“Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly.”
This quote illustrates my aspirations. Needless to say, I have a lifetime of work to achieve these values. I would like my life (as a researcher, teacher, father, husband, kidney TX recipient) to reflect these values, eventually.
Professionally, I am an Associate Professor in Marketing at the University of Sydney Business School, where I teach across several bachelor’s and master’s Programs, relating to Marketing as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Business Strategy. I have developed a unique unit in the business curriculum titled “Poverty Alleviation and Profitability” for master’s students and currently developing a new unit titled “Marketing and Sustainable Development” for bachelor’s students. My teaching and learning philosophy involve applying elements of the Socratic Method whereby the emphasis is on learning by asking rather than telling. I am lucky to be supervising two excellent Ph.D. scholars, examining the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and business strategies.
I am intrigued by how firms engage with big social problems such as poverty, gender equality, hunger, and climate change, at a profit! I have been invited to the United Nations Head Quarters in both New York and Geneva to take part in discussions relating to the Sustainable Development Goals and Business. Therefore, my research attempts to understand both philosophically and practically why and how businesses can re-imagine their purpose that includes engaging with both profits and alleviating social issues, simultaneously! I believe that businesses that can reflect on the following question will be able to combine profit with purpose, a characteristic that will define the leaders of the future: Where does my passion meet the world’s greatest need, at a profit?
